LYRAE – THEORY vs OBSERVATION
نویسنده
چکیده
The luminosities, effective temperatures and metallicities that are derived empirically by Kovács and Jurcsik from the light curves of a large number of globular cluster and field RRab and RRc stars are compared to theoretical RR Lyrae models. The strong luminosity dependence of the empirical blue and red edges (LogL vs. LogTeff diagram) is in disagreement with that of both radiative and convective models. A reexamination of the theoretical uncertainties in the modelling leads us to conclude that the disagreement appears irreconcilable. متن کاملFourier Decomposition of RR Lyrae Pulsations: Theory Versus Observations
Fourier decomposition is employed to compare the light curves of RR Lyrae stars with those emerging from hydrodynamic models. Very good agreement is obtained between theory and observation for the RRc stars, but in the case of the RRab stars there are significant discrepancies in the Fourier phase quantities 4>21 and 4>31' The deficiencies of the models are not remedied by replacing Carson opac...
متن کاملRR Lyrae Distance Scale: Theory and Observations
The RR Lyrae distance scale is reviewed. In particular, we discuss theoretical and empirical methods currently adopted in the literature. Moreover, we also outline pros and cons of optical and near-infrared mean magnitudes to overcome some of the problems currently affecting RR Lyrae distances. The importance of the Kband Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZK) relation for RR Lyrae is also discus...
متن کاملDouble-mode Rr Lyrae Variables: Pulsational Masses Revisited
Double-mode RR Lyrae variables (i.e. radial variables which are simultaneously pulsating in both fundamental and first overtone modes) appear a fundamental tool for investigating the mass of old Population II Horizontal Branch (HB) stars. The most widespread method adopted for evaluating the masses of these objects is based on the Petersen (1973) approach, which relies only on pulsational perio...
متن کاملThe Cepheid Instability Strip in the GAIA Era
We present recent results concerning distance determinations based on the two most popular primary distance indicators, namely classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae. We discuss the problems affecting the Cepheid distance scale, and in particular the dependence of fundamental Period-Luminosity (PL) and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations on the metal content. The key advantages in using the K-band...
